has anyone tried merging Q&A with forums or mailing lists? How did it go?

I'm thinking of a site with membership united across different media: a traditional forum for subjective discussions; OSQA for questions with objective answers; and an email mailing list to allow members to participate in both forum and Q&A via email rather than web interface.

Has anyone attempted anything like this? How did it go?
