How to find active members?

This will order by last activity in the given period:

SELECT count(*), author_id,added_at FROM forum_node where added_at > '2011-01-01' and added_at < '2011-01-08' group by author_id order by added_at desc

This will order by most posts in the given period:

SELECT count(*), author_id,added_at FROM forum_node where added_at > '2011-01-01' and added_at < '2011-01-08' group by author_id order by added_at desc
