Do I need my own SMTP email server to run OSQA on a VPS?

I installed osqa on a VPS. Currently users does not get validation link emails even though it says A message with an email validation link was just sent to your address. in the span. I set up the email settings as per gmail settings.

After finding no errors in /var/log/apache2/error.log or /var/log/apache2/osqa.error.log, I am unsure what to do next to fix the problem. I have APP_URL="www.<mydomain>.co.nz", am I missing anyother settings? Should I isntall an email server on my VPS and use my own instead?

You can use GMail as free SMTP server provider. Take a look at this links:

Outgoing Mail (SMTP) Server: smtp.gmail.com
Use Authentication: Yes
Use Secure Connection: Yes (this can be TLS or SSL depending on your mail client)
Username: your GMail account
Password: your GMail password
Port: 465 or 587

Dosn't this solution suffer from google limit on daily send/receive emails per day? Do I need to change anything in the google settings?
