I'm not sure if this is a good idea. In my experience, mails sent using SendMail doesn't have a verified source so most often than not, they are marked as spam by some email services like Yahoo Mail and Gmail.

OSQA is not likely to support direct access to Sendmail. The SMTP functionality provides solid, high-volume mail handling and is more thoroughly standards-based than Sendmail. If a customer approached us and needed this feature, then I suppose we would develop a module for it, but without specific sponsorship it probably won't happen.

That's strange, I'm running a mail program on my linux server at mediatemple and set the mail options to just use localhost, and voila it worked. I was thinking it needed something special too since it looks like it wants an smtp host like setting up a mail client.

If you are running an email server on the local machine, then you probably have smtp running there too. That is different than sendmail.
