What is the average time a question stays under moderation? This question is especially important for new members of the community since it seems that the current situation is a little bit of a deadlock: in order to ask questions freely without being confined to the "in moderation" status one needs at least 25 karma points... in the same time, in order to gather these points one needs to ask questions... Above all longer it takes for the question to be released, less chances it has to be answered. Maybe moderation is not needed since there always are other users who can quickly vote down and report an inappropriate question or recommend some edits in case it just wasn't formated correctly. Just thought I'd mention this cause it might help improve the proceedings of this otherwise excellent q&a forum. thanks in advance.

This is an interesting question, since the answer relies more on the responsive actions of the original posters than it does on the moderators. A lot of folks post problems as postings here, for example, which we don't allow. Bug reports belong at http://jira.osqa.net - not here.

The most common reason questions remain in moderation is that users post something less than an actual "question" as the title of their posting. We require all postings to have a clear, specific question as their title. We normally respond with a private comment to the original poster informing him what need to be changed in order for the question to leave moderation. In many cases, the original poster takes no action, and the question remains in moderation indefinitely. If the original poster doesn't care enough to fix the posting, then why should we?

Moderation is here to stay, @rcopper. People who actually make the improvements suggested to them in private comments get their appropriate questions out of moderation and into public view quickly. Those who cannot or will not do so remain moderated. It's pretty simple.

BTW, this question was in moderation for just under 3 hours.

I asked a question yesterday and it took about 22 hours to be released. The problem is that my question is now dumped down the list, and I got almost no views. I was not contacted to change the question.

@Michael1, your question was a good one, and it was only moderated because you're a newcomer here. It should have been acted on more quickly, but I wouldn't despair that you won't get any help. You didn't get any private comment about moderation because there was nothing wrong with your question. The low views is a simple consequence of the question being in moderation - most users couldn't view it at all.

I see you signed up for the 24-hour Service Level Agreement - a bit pricey, but definitely worth it if you need quick answers!

Oh wait! You didn't sign up for an SLA - this is the free, community support option. It may take longer than 24 hours...

PS - I am giving you some bonus karma points so you will be able to ask additional useful questions more immediately. I will also ask someone on the team to look at your question.

@rickross I'm not complaining - just pointing out the down side of this approach. I don't know why you guys don't simply edit the questions that are not formatted appropriately, but you probably have your reasons.

@Michael1, I understand that you mean to be positive. We don't just edit and fix things because we gain basically nothing by doing so, and it costs us valuable time and energy.

Our position is simple. If someone cannot or will not express a question in the format we require, then we will not give it time and energy.

@rickross thanks for the answer. indeed this question was quickly moderated. I guess I was more worried about a previous question of mine that took longer to moderate after I made the adjustments recommended to me in the private message (but I have to aknowledge the fact that it was in a weekend), so my hope for the message to be seen before it is burried under fresher questions was lost. This being said I wonder now whether it is possible to address a question to some particular members of the community? I assume some of them might have the answer I look for..
